Your fingers will power you up

The six most important and widely practised mudras (symbolic hand gestures) in yoga and meditation for energy, focus, and healing are Gyan, Prana, Apana, Shunya, Prithvi, and Anjali. 


1. Gyan Mudra (Mudra of Knowledge)

  • How to perform: Touch the tip of your thumb to the tip of your index finger, while keeping the other three fingers straight and relaxed.

  • Benefits: Enhances concentration, sharpens memory, and brings calm clarity to the brain. 

2. Prana Mudra (Mudra of Life)

  • How to perform: Touch the tips of your ring finger and little finger to the tip of your thumb, leaving the index and middle fingers extended.

  • Benefits: Boosts overall vitality, reduces fatigue, and supports eye health. 

3. Apana Mudra (Mudra of Digestion)

  • How to perform: Touch the tips of your middle finger and ring finger to the tip of your thumb, keeping the index and little fingers straight.

  • Benefits: Supports natural detoxification, aids digestion, and helps regulate elimination processes.

4. Shunya Mudra (Mudra of Void/Space)

  • How to perform: Press the pad of your middle finger down to the base of your thumb, and wrap your thumb gently over the finger.

  • Benefits: Alleviates earaches, reduces spatial pressure in the head, and helps balance the space element within the body. 

5. Prithvi Mudra (Mudra of Earth)

  • How to perform: Touch the tip of your ring finger to the tip of your thumb with light pressure, keeping the remaining fingers extended.

  • Benefits: Promotes physical stability, helps build tissue, reduces chronic fatigue, and grounds the nervous system. 

6. Anjali Mudra (Salutation Mudra)

  • How to perform: Bring your palms together at the center of your chest (the heart chakra) with your fingers pointing upward and thumbs resting lightly against the sternum.

  • Benefits: Relieves stress, calms the nervous system, and integrates the right and left hemispheres of the brain.
